Sultan Ahmet Mosque, popularly known as the Blue Mosque, is one of the famous landmarks in Istanbul. Built in early 1600s during the rule of Ottoman Sultan Ahmed I, it incorporates some Byzantine Christian elements of the neighboring Hagia Sophia with traditional Islamic architecture and is considered to be the last great mosque of the classical period. Shot here are a series of photographs I took of the mosque and Hagia Sofia at dusk, during my recent trip to Istanbul.
No visit to Istanbul is complete without a visit to the Hagia Sophia. Built as a church around mid 5th century, it was converted to a mosque after the Ottomans took over Istanbul. Since Turkey became a republic, it is now a museum, and the visitors are able to experience more than millennium worth of art and architecture.
